چکیده

We study the pycnonuclear burning of 34Ne in the inner crust of an accreting neutron star. We show that the associated energy production rate can be calculated analytically for any arbitrary temporal variability of the mass accretion rate. We argue that the theoretical time-scale for 34Ne burning is currently very uncertain and ranges from a fraction of a millisecond to a few years. The fastest allowable burning may change the composition of the accreted crust while the slowest burning leads to a time-independent nuclear energy generation rate for a variable accretion. The results are important for constructing self-consistent models of the accreted crust and deep crustal heating in neutron stars which enter soft X-ray transients.

Models of crustal heating in accreting neutron stars

Aims. Heating associated with non-equilibrium nuclear reactions in accreting neutron-star crusts is reconsidered, taking into account suppression of neutrino losses demonstrated recently by Gupta et al. Two initial compositions of the nuclear burning ashes, Ai = 56 and Ai = 106, are considered. Dependence of the integrated crustal heating on uncertainties plaguing pycnonuclear reaction models i...

Implications of low-energy fusion hindrance on stellar burning and nucleosynthesis

We investigate the consequences of a new phenomenological model prediction of strongly reduced low-energy astrophysical S-factors for carbon and oxygen fusion reactions on stellar burning and nucleosynthesis. The new model drastically reduces the reaction rates in stellar matter at temperatures T < ∼ (3–10) × 108 K, especially at densities ρ >∼ 109 g cm−3, in a strongly screened or even pycnonu...

Pycnonuclear reactions in dense stellar matter

We discuss pycnonuclear burning of highly exotic atomic nuclei in deep crusts of neutron stars, at densities up to 10 g cm. As an application, we consider pycnonuclear burning of matter accreted on a neutron star in a soft X-ray transient (SXT, a compact binary containing a neutron star and a lowmass companion). The energy released in this burning, while the matter sinks into the stellar crust ...

Theoretical Models of Superbursts on Accreting Neutron Stars

We carry out a general-relativistic global linear stability analysis of the amassed carbon fuel on the surface of an accreting neutron star to determine the conditions under which superbursts occur. We reproduce the general observational characteristics of superbursts, including burst fluences, recurrence times, and the absence of superbursts on stars with accretion rates Ṁ < 0.1ṀEdd, where ṀEd...

Reaction Rates for Dense Matter Burning

Karl-Ludwig Kratz Universität Mainz Email: [email protected] An interesting question in nuclear astrophysics is the fate of post X-ray burst matter. Once an accreting neutron star has undergone thermonuclear runaway, the ashes of the burst are forced down into the crust of the neutron star. With increasing density a volume element of matter undergoes a number of electron captures and neutron...
